#14.3 Deductive Reasoning

Aim 1: to use MP or MT to determine a valid conclusion
Aim 2: to translate an English argument into symbolic form and vice-versa

  • (1-10) all
  • (17-33) all

You might want to type this homework out as there is alot of writing.

For example, #17 should look like the following below:

English argument:

If Sherlock Holmes gathers all the clues, then he will be victorious. Sherlock Holmes gathers all the clues.

Symbolic argument:

Let P: Sherlock Holmes gathers all the clues.

Let Q: He will be victorious.

P----->Q

P

Conclusion?

Therefore Q by MP.

He will be victorious.

#18 should look like:

English argument:

If Golum is carnivorous, then Golum is dangerous. Golum is dangerous.

Symbolic translation:

Let P: Golum is carnivorous.

Let Q: Golum is dangerous.

P------>Q

Q

Conclusion?

no valid conclusion because the symbolic argument does not look like either one of our vald forms of reasoning: MP or MT

Remember, you only know 2 forms of valid reasoning! They are:

MP

P---->Q

P

Conclusion?

Therefore, Q.

___________________

MT

P---->Q

~Q

Conclusion?

Therefore, ~P.
